Die KZ-Außenlager St. Lambrecht und Schloss Lind. Zwischen Wahrnehmung und Erinnerung
-
The major studies on the men’s and women’s camp in St. Lambrecht and the men’s camp at Schloss Lind were conducted in the 1990s and 2000s. In the year 2025 it is time to revisit, contextualize and expand on these earlier findings. Since the most recent studies, the digitalization of archives has significantly improved the accessibility of archives and the availability of documents. Furthermore, the discovery of some ego-documents has also made a significant contribution, allowing a reassessment of the source material related to these subcamps. The study is based on a broad range of sources, including memoirs of former prisoners and local eyewitnesses as well as official documents such as police or administrative records and transport changes issued by camp authorities. These sources provide a more nuanced view of the camps. While the camps located in the district Murau were, in some respects, less severe than other subcamps, forced labor and punishments remained a defining part of everyday life. The study also examines specific incidents in detail, such as the planned liquidation of the first male “Kommando” in St. Lambrecht in July 1943, escape attempts, deaths, thefts, and punishments. A central focus is placed on moments of interaction between prisoners and the local population, both inside and outside the camps, as well as on how the camps and the prisoners were seen by the local population. Additionally, the study includes a register of all known victims of the three subcamps, based on transport and administrative records.
