Karya 1943 : Forced Labour and the Holocaust. Exhibition catalogue
-
The exhibition is the first in Germany and Greece to address the issue of forced labour of Greek Jews during the German occupation.
The starting point of the exhibition is the photographic collection of a German civil engineer who had served in Greece during the Second World War. Andreas Assael, himself the son of a survivor from Thessaloniki, spotted and bought this unique collection of photographs at a flea market in Munich in 2002.
This innovative and participatory exhibition presents the events of the period and the extremely harsh working conditions in Karya. Most of the Jewish forced labourers were murdered in Auschwitz in August 1943. Eight biographies of victims and survivors are the focus of the exhibition. Two versions of the exhibition are presented in parallel in Greece and Germany.
