The forgotten camp. Archaeological research at the former forest camp Gunskirchen, Upper Austria

The Gunskirchen camp, a subcamp of the Mauthausen
concentration camp, existed from mid-April until the beginning
of May 1945. Due to the lack of sources, it has
received little attention in research. In what follows, an
overview of the research on the Gunskirchen camp will be
presented with a focus on the archaeological investigations,
in particular the evaluation of the findings and features. On
the basis of these sources, an attempt will be made to give
an insight into ‘everyday life’ in the Gunskirchen camp and
to draw conclusions about the people who had the recovered
finds in their possession or used them. Last but not
least, an outlook on future research questions will be given.
